OUR LEATHERS & SUSTAINABILITY
At Monsieur et Madame, every material has meaning. Our notebooks are bound in premium Italian cowhide leather, sourced exclusively as a byproduct of the food industry. No animal is raised for its hide. Instead, we honor the cycle of life by transforming what would be waste into something lasting, functional, and beautiful. We partner with Northern Italy’s finest tanneries, where centuries-old techniques meet sustainable practices. Each hide is vegetable-tanned, allowing it to develop a rich patina that grows deeper and more characterful with time. Much like the words you’ll capture inside. Every collection is cut from a single hide, yielding only 5 to 20 notebooks. Once that hide is finished, the edition can never be repeated making your notebook not just personal, but irreplaceable. This is our philosophy of sustainable luxury: respecting resources, minimizing waste, and creating timeless objects made to be treasured forever.
Each Monsieur et Madame notebook is hand-bound in Athens by a family-owned atelier with decades of experience in fine printing and bookbinding. Here, tradition meets precision: leather is cut, stitched, and pressed by hand, while fabrics are carefully wrapped around FSC®-certified backing boards. We work only in small batches, allowing meticulous attention to detail and a finish that machines alone can never replicate. Every notebook carries subtle marks of its making. The texture of natural leather, the grain of fabric, the quiet weight of craft. This is not mass production. This is intentional craftsmanship.
